Ambassador Kairuki calls for Africa to become a creator and leader in artificial intelligence development
Tanzania has called on the international community to collaborate in creating fair and transparent rules for artificial intelligence (AI) governance.Minister Angellah Kairuki, head of Communication and Information Technology, emphasized that developing nations must have a significant role in shaping AI policies as the technology transforms economies and societies.
Speaking at the Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, she highlighted AI's potential to drive Tanzania’s Vision 2050, focusing on sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and public administration.
The government is implementing reforms to build a balanced policy framework, including modernizing data governance, strengthening cybersecurity, and investing in digital infrastructure like the National ICT Broadband Backbone.
Kairuki stressed the need for international partnerships to address the growing technology gap between developed and developing countries, ensuring equitable access to AI benefits.
Tanzania’s efforts reflect broader African concerns about being left behind in the AI revolution, underscoring the importance of global cooperation for inclusive and sustainable development.
