Tanzania Allocates TZS 137.81 Billion in 2026/27 Industry and Trade Budget to Industrial Projects and Regional Trade Expansion

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has presented a TZS 137.81 billion budget for the 2026/27 financial year, representing a modest increase from the previous year's allocation.

The budget is focused on strengthening Tanzania’s industrialisation agenda, expanding trade opportunities across Africa, and supporting entrepreneurship, especially among young people.

A key priority is the implementation of the Liganga iron ore and Mchuchuma coal integrated project, which is expected to be developed through a partnership between the National Development Corporation (NDC) and China’s Shudao Investment Group (SDIG).The project is projected to reduce steel imports, save approximately USD 1.22 billion in foreign exchange annually, and create around 6,500 direct jobs and 26,000 indirect jobs.

Other strategic projects include the Maganga Matitu iron project, the Magadi Soda project, the Katewaka coal project, rehabilitation of the Kilimanjaro Machine Tools Company, and expansion of biological production facilities.

The budget also supports the development of industrial clusters in regions across Mainland Tanzania, training for more than 21,000 entrepreneurs, and improved access to finance and markets for small businesses.

In trade, the government plans to strengthen implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), where 40 Tanzanian companies have already traded using AfCFTA certificates of origin.Additional measures include improving cross-border trade facilitation and promoting exports to African markets. The ministry also intends to establish innovation and business hubs aimed at helping young entrepreneurs participate in the growing digital economy.

Overall, the budget aligns with Tanzania’s long-term industrial development and economic transformation objectives under Vision 2050 and the Fourth National Five-Year Development Plan.
