Tanzania and Russia Strengthen Economic Cooperation with New Air Routes and Investment Agreements

Tanzania and Russia have strengthened their economic and investment relations following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s official state visit to Russia held from June 3 to 5, 2026.The visit resulted in several major outcomes aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and strategic sectors.

One of the key announcements is the launch of direct Air Tanzania flights connecting Dar es Salaam, Moscow, and Zanzibar starting July 2, 2026, a move expected to boost tourism, trade, and business travel between the two countries.

In addition, the Tanzania Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA) signed a cooperation agreement with Russia’s Roscongress Foundation to promote investment opportunities and strengthen business linkages.

During high-level talks between President Samia and President Vladimir Putin, both leaders highlighted the need to expand cooperation in mining, agriculture, energy, transport, healthcare, education, and technology.

Russia noted a 20–25% increase in bilateral trade in the past year and expressed readiness to increase imports of Tanzanian agricultural products while expanding exports of fertilizers and industrial goods.

President Samia emphasized Tanzania’s growing economy, macroeconomic stability, and its strategic position serving a regional market of over 500 million people. She also encouraged Russian investors to engage in mineral processing, energy development, infrastructure, and agricultural value chains. The cooperation discussions were reinforced during the Tanzania-Russia Business Forum held alongside the 29th St.Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2026), where both sides explored long-term investment opportunities.

Overall, the agreements reflect both countries’ intention to close the gap between diplomatic relations and actual economic performance, while expanding practical cooperation in key development sectors.
