Tanzania and Singapore Deepen Economic Cooperation Through Tax, Trade and Investment Agreements

Tanzania and Singapore have strengthened their bilateral relations following the signing of five agreements and memoranda of understanding during the state visit of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Dar es Salaam on 9 June 2026.

The agreements cover avoidance of double taxation, prevention of tax evasion, trade facilitation, public service capacity building and diplomatic consultations.

Tanzanian and Singaporean leaders stated that the agreements are expected to reduce barriers to cross-border investment and encourage greater economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Double Taxation Agreement was signed by representatives from both governments and is intended to clarify taxation rights on income generated through cross-border business activities.Officials noted that the agreement should improve the business environment for investors and companies operating in both markets.

During the same visit, the Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA) hosted the Tanzania-Singapore Business Forum, bringing together government leaders, investors and private-sector representatives.Discussions focused on expanding trade, investment, digital transformation, logistics, financial services, manufacturing and industrial development.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan highlighted that bilateral trade reached USD 74 million in 2024 and that Singaporean investments in Tanzania have exceeded USD 535 million across 36 projects since 1997, creating more than 3,200 jobs. She encouraged stronger commercial ties and identified Singapore as a strategic partner for Tanzania’s economic transformation.

The forum also featured the exchange of a tripartite memorandum of understanding involving the Singapore Business Federation, the Tanzania National Chamber of Commerce and the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce.

Both countries expressed interest in deeper cooperation across East Africa and Asia, while Singapore also supported efforts to diversify trade routes and strengthen supply chains.

Officials further pointed to opportunities in infrastructure, tourism, financial services, arbitration, ports and value-added industries as key areas for future collaboration.
