Tanzania expands rural connectivity with 758 new telecom towers

Tanzania has been recognized internationally for its telecommunications infrastructure project, which deployed 758 new communication towers to improve connectivity in rural areas.

The initiative, launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in April 2026, has significantly enhanced access to mobile services, internet, and digital tools for previously underserved communities.

Minister Angellah Jasmine Kairuki accepted the WSIS Prizes 2026 award in Geneva, highlighting Tanzania's efforts to bridge the digital divide and support socio-economic development.

The project aligns with the government's digital inclusion agenda, enabling access to online education, telemedicine, mobile banking, and market information.

Tanzania also received recognition in seven categories at the WSIS event, showcasing its growing reputation as a regional leader in digital infrastructure. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other African nations facing similar challenges in expanding connectivity to remote areas.
