Tanzania introduces home UTI self-test kit to support early detection and timely care

Residents in Tanzania are set to benefit from a new home-based urinary tract infection (UTI) screening solution following the introduction of the Checkfor UTI Test kit.

The product has been launched to help people carry out preliminary UTI screening from the comfort of their homes, reducing the need for immediate clinic visits for initial checks.Health experts say the tool is designed to support early detection, especially in cases where symptoms are mild or ignored.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, community health specialist Eshton Nkala explained that UTIs remain a common global health concern affecting millions of people. He noted that delayed recognition of symptoms often leads to complications, recurrent infections, or worsening health conditions.Common symptoms include frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, lower abdominal pain, and changes in urine colour or smell. The Checkfor UTI Test is intended as a preliminary screening tool and not a replacement for professional medical diagnosis or treatment.Individuals who test positive or experience symptoms are still encouraged to seek proper medical consultation and further laboratory testing.

The initiative aims to help people make quicker, more informed decisions about their health, especially those who delay seeking care due to time constraints, fear, or lack of awareness. The product is manufactured in Tanzania by Canadian Biotech, showing growing local involvement in healthcare innovation. It is currently available through selected pharmacies and suppliers including JD Pharmacy, Bariki Pharmacy, and Cugra General Supplier.Health officials emphasize that early detection remains key in reducing complications and improving treatment outcomes for UTIs.
