Switzerland produced a disciplined and tactical performance to beat Algeria 2–0 and secure their place in the World Cup last 16.The match, played at BC Place in Vancouver, saw Switzerland striker Breel Embolo open the scoring in the 10th minute after a quick counterattack.

The move started from deep in Switzerland’s half, with young winger Johan Manzambi breaking forward down the left before setting up Embolo for a simple finish from close range.

After taking the lead, Switzerland shifted their shape, at times forming a five-man midfield when defending, making it very difficult for Algeria to find space or create clear chances.

Algeria, coached by Vladimir Petkovic—who previously managed Switzerland for seven years—struggled to break down their opponents despite having more possession in phases of the game.Their best opportunity in the first half came just before halftime when Ibrahim Maza fired narrowly wide.

Switzerland doubled their lead shortly after the break when Dan Ndoye finished calmly after a loose clearance from Algeria defender Rafik Belghali fell kindly to him inside the box.From there, Switzerland controlled the match with experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka organising the defensive structure and guiding counterattacks.Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez had a chance to reduce the deficit but shot straight at a defender, reflecting his side’s frustration.

Switzerland continued to threaten on the break, though substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late chance that could have made the scoreline more comfortable.Despite that miss, the result was already secured.

Switzerland now advance to the Round of 16, where they are set to face either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver next week after a composed and efficient team display.
