Tanzania–Mozambique trade opportunities highlighted during state visit

As Mozambican President Daniel Chapo begins his state visit to Tanzania, fresh data from the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) has revealed significant untapped export opportunities between the two countries, especially in agricultural and manufactured products.

The visit, which includes high-level talks in Dar es Salaam and Magogoni State House, comes at a time when bilateral trade is growing but still below its full potential.According to TanTrade, Tanzania’s exports to Mozambique increased from $15.48 million in 2021 to $31.26 million in 2025, showing positive growth. However, several sectors remain largely underexploited.Maize presents the biggest gap, with an estimated export potential of $5.7 million but actual exports of only about $5,100.Non-alcoholic beverages also show weak performance, with a $4.5 million potential but only $7,100 realised exports.Other key opportunities include sweetened water valued at $1.96 million in untapped potential and glass containers with a gap of about $6.5 million.TanTrade has encouraged exporters to diversify into products such as rice, soya beans, sesame seeds, fertilisers, and onions.

It also stresses the need for improved trade logistics, stronger transport infrastructure, and more efficient border and customs procedures along the Tanzania–Mozambique corridor to reduce costs and transit time.On overall trade balance, Tanzania continues to maintain a surplus, with exports consistently exceeding imports over the past five years.Key exports include manufactured goods, cement, glassware, cosmetics, iron and steel products.

The report highlights that while diplomatic relations remain strong, commercial ties still lag behind their full potential, and the current state visit is seen as a key opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
