The Tanzanian government has initiated a major modernization program for the National Museum, integrating digital technology, upgrading infrastructure, and reforming outdated legislation to position the cultural sector as a key driver of tourism revenue and economic growth.

Deputy Minister Hamad Hassan Chande emphasized that museums are now part of the economy, requiring legal reforms to balance heritage preservation with income generation.Over 1.5 billion Tanzanian shillings have been allocated for renovations and capacity building, supported by the Tourism Development Fund.The museum's digital transformation includes digitizing collections for online access and modernizing exhibitions with interactive technology.Visitor numbers have surged, with over one million visitors in recent years, and the goal is to attract two million in five years.

The initiative reflects a strategic shift to leverage cultural heritage for economic development, encouraging citizen engagement and academic research.
