Tanzania strengthens position as leading honey exporter in East Africa with rising production and revenue

Tanzania has emerged as the leading honey producer in the East African Community and second in the Southern African Development Community, showing strong growth in its beekeeping industry. The sector has expanded significantly in recent years, with honey production increasing from about 33,861 tonnes to around 75,000 tonnes.

This growth has placed Tanzania among the top global honey producers, ranking 14th worldwide according to government figures shared during World Bee Day celebrations held in Tabora region. The expansion of the beekeeping sector has also brought notable economic and social benefits.Export earnings from honey have risen sharply, reaching about 19.2 billion Tanzanian shillings by March 2025, compared to 11.4 billion shillings in 2024.This represents a major increase driven by improved production methods, better market access, and rising international demand for Tanzanian honey. The industry has also created over 43,000 new jobs, with many young people benefiting from these opportunities.

The government has supported this growth through initiatives such as the “Achia Shoka, Tundika Mzinga” campaign, which encourages communities to adopt beekeeping instead of activities like charcoal production that contribute to deforestation.

During the World Bee Day celebrations, officials distributed modern beehives, supported training programmes, and promoted inclusive participation, including groups for people with hearing impairments.

In addition, the government introduced energy-efficient stoves to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal, aligning with national clean energy goals.Beekeeping is also highlighted as important for environmental conservation since bees support pollination, biodiversity, and sustainable ecosystems.

Overall, Tanzania’s honey sector is becoming a key driver of both rural income generation and environmental protection, positioning the country for continued growth in global honey markets.
