TCRA launches Season II of Samia Kalamu Awards to recognise excellence in journalism

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has officially launched Season Two of the Samia Kalamu Awards in Dar es Salaam, an initiative aimed at strengthening journalism standards and recognising journalists’ contribution to national development. The awards are organised jointly by TCRA, the Tanzania Media Women’s Association (Tamwa), and the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB).

Speaking during the launch held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, TCRA Director General Peter Mwasalyanda said the awards are part of broader government efforts to promote professionalism in the media sector by encouraging integrity, accountability, and high-quality reporting.

He explained that this year’s edition places greater emphasis on journalism that is well-researched, supported by credible data, and demonstrates clear impact on national development.

According to him, eligible entries must have been published between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, with the final awards ceremony expected to take place between October and December 2026 after a structured selection process.

A notable feature of the awards is the blended evaluation system, where 40 percent of the final score will come from a panel of judges and 60 percent will be determined through public voting via an official online platform.Submissions will undergo editorial and technical screening before being opened for public participation.

Mwasalyanda also highlighted that the government views the media as an important partner in promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness on social and economic issues.

Tamwa chairperson Dr Kanaeli Kaale encouraged journalists to participate widely, dismissing concerns that the awards could be used to silence critical reporting, and instead emphasised that the initiative aims to promote professional and development-focused journalism.

Meanwhile, JAB Director General Patrick Kipangula noted that this year’s edition will require accreditation verification to ensure compliance and wider participation of eligible journalists.
