Tesla has recently launched a six-seater version of its popular Model Y SUV with an extended wheelbase, known as the Model Y L, in the United States.This move aims to increase demand for its electric vehicles following the removal of a significant federal tax credit that previously supported EV sales.The starting price for this new variant is set at $61,990, which converts to about R1 million in South African rand.The company also announced that this long-wheelbase model is available in the United Arab Emirates.

Rather than developing entirely new models, Tesla has focused on releasing various versions of the Model Y and Model 3 to stimulate interest among buyers.The Model Y L was first introduced in China last year, where it helped maintain strong sales despite competition from local manufacturers like BYD.It has since been rolled out to other markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

This three-row seating configuration offers a range of up to 523 kilometres on a single charge and is anticipated to help revive interest in the US, where sales had slowed down.

Tesla recently reported strong second-quarter delivery figures that exceeded expectations from analysts, particularly with a recovery noted in Europe.This positive performance raises hopes that the company might reverse its recent trend of annual sales declines in 2026.

The launch reflects Tesla's strategy to adapt existing platforms to meet diverse consumer needs in different regions, especially as the global EV market faces challenges from policy changes and increased competition.
