Sixteen killed and dozens injured in N1 bus crash near Touwsriver

A serious road accident on the N1 near Touwsriver in the Western Cape has claimed the lives of sixteen people and left many others injured.According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the incident involved a passenger bus that was travelling from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.The bus was carrying approximately 78 passengers at the time of the crash, including children.Authorities reported that the vehicle overturned under circumstances that are still under investigation.The RTMC confirmed that 16 occupants were declared dead at the scene as a result of the crash.In addition, around 20 passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were transported to Worcester Hospital for urgent medical treatment.A further 43 occupants reportedly refused medical treatment after the incident, although officials have not disclosed the reasons for this decision.Emergency services, including paramedics, traffic officials and law enforcement, responded to the scene shortly after the accident was reported.

The N1 is one of South Africa’s busiest national highways, and incidents of this nature often result in significant disruptions to traffic flow and emergency response operations.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the crash, but investigations are expected to focus on factors such as road conditions, possible mechanical failure, and driver fatigue.
