The Mandalorian and Grogu posts weakest Star Wars box office opening in Disney era

The film The Mandalorian and Grogu has debuted at the box office with the lowest opening weekend of any Star Wars film released under Disney’s ownership of the franchise.

Despite topping the global box office in its opening frame, the film’s performance has been described as underwhelming compared to previous Star Wars releases.

It earned approximately US$102 million in North America over the US Memorial Day four-day weekend, contributing to a global opening total of around US$165 million.

The film, which continues the story of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian and stars Pedro Pascal alongside the character known as “Baby Yoda” (Grogu), was expected to benefit from the series’ strong streaming popularity.

However, its opening figures fell short even when compared with Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), previously the lowest-performing Star Wars film in the Disney era.Solo opened with about US$171 million globally, and around US$103 million domestically, before inflation adjustments.

Industry analysts noted that while the film’s performance is modest for the Star Wars brand, it is not necessarily a failure given its reportedly lower production budget of about US$165 million compared with larger franchise entries.

Analysts also suggested that spin-off films typically do not match the earnings of main saga instalments, and that the film may recover momentum in subsequent weeks due to positive audience reactions despite mixed critical reception.

The report also highlights broader concerns about potential “Star Wars fatigue” following Disney’s aggressive expansion of the franchise across both cinema and streaming platforms.

While Disney has achieved strong engagement through Disney+ series such as The Mandalorian and Andor, other projects have struggled to maintain consistent audience interest.Looking ahead, the next Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for release in May 2027.
