Sting suggests decline in manual labour may be influencing modern masculinity and social behaviour
Tom Morello has released a new politically charged single titled ‘Adjourn It’, featuring System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian and Morello’s 15-year-old son, Roman Morello.
The track forms part of Morello’s upcoming solo work and arrives alongside the announcement of his Power To The People festival, which will include high-profile acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters and Joan Baez.Morello described the collaboration as a “clarion call for justice in unjust times”, emphasising that “every act of art is an act of resistance”.The song was produced by Zakk Cervini and combines heavy, distorted guitar riffs with Tankian’s intense vocal delivery. Its lyrical themes focus on resistance against injustice, with specific reference to immigration persecution and opposition to rising fascism.Tankian’s verses deliver direct calls to action, reinforcing the song’s protest message. The accompanying music video features footage of the trio in the studio, intercut with scenes from the 1954 film Salt Of The Earth.
The film, which depicts Mexican-American miners fighting labour exploitation and racism, is used to underline the single’s themes of solidarity, historical resistance and political struggle.According to the description, the film itself was an act of defiance against Hollywood blacklisting, further echoing the song’s message.Morello also highlighted the intergenerational nature of the project, noting the involvement of his teenage son alongside Tankian. He continues to tour with Bruce Springsteen on the ‘Land Of Hope And Dreams’ tour and remains active in politically themed live performances.
The Power To The People festival, scheduled for October in Maryland, will bring together a wide range of artists aligned with social and political activism, reinforcing Morello’s long-standing commitment to protest music and activism through art.
