The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Emil Andrae to a two-year contract reportedly worth US$3.1 million, continuing the club's busy off-season roster overhaul under general manager John Chayka.
The 24-year-old Swedish blueliner joined Toronto as part of the trade completed last month that sent goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers.Andrae appeared in 61 games for Philadelphia during the 2025-26 NHL season, producing 13 points while earning regular NHL playing time.
Since being selected 54th overall in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, he has accumulated 20 points, including three goals and 17 assists, across 107 NHL games. The new contract gives Toronto additional stability on defence as the organization continues reshaping its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
The Leafs have been among the NHL's most active teams during free agency, adding veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky along with forwards Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons and Teddy Blueger to improve the club's depth.
Toronto also strengthened its long-term outlook by selecting highly regarded winger Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and signing him to a three-year entry-level contract.
The signing of Andrae reflects the organization's commitment to integrating younger players acquired through trades while balancing experienced additions made during free agency.Together, these moves demonstrate Toronto's effort to build a more competitive and balanced roster for the upcoming NHL season.
