Trump Administration Plans $2 Billion in Grants to Quantum Computing Companies with Federal Equity Stakes

The Trump administration is set to announce a significant $2 billion investment in quantum computing through the U.S.Department of Commerce. The funding will be distributed to nine companies working on quantum hardware and related technologies via grants that include the government taking equity stakes in the recipients.

This approach marks an expansion of federal involvement in strategic sectors critical for national security, advanced manufacturing, and maintaining a competitive edge against China.

IBM is expected to receive the largest portion, approximately $1 billion, which it will use to establish Anderon, a new 300-millimeter quantum wafer foundry.IBM plans to match the grant with an additional $1 billion of its own capital.

GlobalFoundries is slated for about $375 million, while other companies including D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, Quantinuum, Infleqtion, and Australian startup Diraq are anticipated to receive around $100 million or less each. The initiative aims to strengthen U.S.leadership in quantum technologies, which are projected to generate up to $850 billion in economic value by 2040, while also supporting job creation and national security interests.

Following the announcement, stocks of the involved companies experienced significant gains, with notable increases for D-Wave, Rigetti, Infleqtion, and others.

This move represents a form of industrial policy that has drawn commentary regarding government intervention in private markets and potential conflicts of interest.

The program also ties into broader efforts to fund quantum research and development, positioning the United States at the forefront of this emerging technological field.
