A jury in Alberta found Arthur Penner and Elijah Strawberry guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Colin Hough, 45, on a rural road east of Calgary on August 6, 2024.Hough, an employee of Rocky View County, was killed after approaching a vehicle involved in an earlier armed encounter.

FortisAlberta surveyor Matthew Andres had been shot in the arm and threatened at the same location by the accused, who attempted to steal his vehicle.The accused then set fire to a vehicle and shot Hough when he arrived on the scene.Both men were also convicted of two counts of armed robbery, including the theft of Hough’s truck.The trial included video evidence showing Hough’s final moments.Penner was arrested five days after the incident, while Strawberry was found a month later on the O’Chiese First Nation.The jury recommended parole eligibility periods ranging from 10 to 25 years.Both men will face mandatory life sentences of 25 years.

Sentencing arguments are expected to begin in November, with Gladue reports requested for both accused and a forensic mental assessment for Strawberry.
