Two men have been denied bail after being charged in connection with a violent disturbance that occurred in the remote Central Australian community of Yuendumu.Northern Territory Police responded to multiple reports around 1 a.m.on Saturday of a large group of people allegedly rioting in the community, located about 300 kilometers northwest of Alice Springs.Authorities said some participants were armed and that several vehicles were set on fire during the unrest, with two vehicles completely destroyed.
Following police intervention to disperse the crowd, officers arrested two suspects: 19-year-old Nehemiah Watson and 36-year-old Ryan Woods, a local artist and footballer.
Both men face multiple charges, including arson, participating in a riot, carrying weapons in public, recklessly endangering serious harm, and property damage.
The matter was heard in Alice Springs court, where Woods' legal representatives requested bail so he could reside in Yulara and fulfill significant cultural responsibilities, including attending funerals and assisting with the repatriation of a deceased person. However, Judge Jonathan Bortoli ruled that concerns about potential reoffending and the risk of failing to appear in court outweighed those factors. The court also heard that Woods was serving a suspended sentence at the time of the alleged offenses and had an extensive criminal history.Watson was likewise denied bail and remains in custody pending his next court appearance, scheduled via video link on August 20.According to information presented in court, the disturbance may have been triggered by the death of a person known to those involved.Police investigations continue, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
