The East African Community (EAC) is set to officially launch the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) as the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology on July 22, 2026.This milestone, celebrated in Entebbe, Uganda, marks a transformative shift in regional public health management.

UVRI will lead advanced virology research, specialized lab training, and disease surveillance, serving as a central hub for diagnostics and knowledge sharing.

The initiative addresses the region's history as a hotspot for viral threats like Ebola and Marburg, which often originate in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The EAC's integration with the DRC has heightened the need for coordinated virological responses, as increased cross-border movement creates transmission risks.The UVRI's designation reflects the EAC's commitment to strengthening health security through collaboration and scientific excellence.

Supported by Germany, the project follows the EAC Health Investment Priority Framework, adopting the 'One Health Approach' to link human, animal, and environmental health.The launch coincides with UVRI's 90th anniversary, highlighting its legacy in East African public health.

A scientific symposium will discuss emerging infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness, underscoring the institute's role in regional resilience.
