France and the United Kingdom have taken part in a joint maritime operation to intercept a tanker suspected of violating international sanctions on Russia, according to French President Emmanuel Macron. The vessel, named the Tagor, was boarded by the French Navy in the Atlantic Ocean in international waters.
Macron stated that the operation was conducted with the support of several partners, including the UK, and was carried out in full compliance with maritime law.In a message shared on social media, Macron described the tanker as being under international sanctions and originating from Russia.
He emphasised that France’s actions reflect a firm commitment to enforcing sanctions regimes designed to restrict Russia’s ability to finance its ongoing war in Ukraine. He also warned that vessels attempting to circumvent these restrictions undermine international law and pose wider risks.
According to Macron, ships of this kind not only facilitate the funding of Russia’s military operations but may also present environmental hazards and risks to maritime safety due to non-compliance with navigation rules.Video footage shared by the French president showed French naval personnel boarding the tanker during the operation.
The interception highlights increasing cooperation between European allies in monitoring and enforcing sanctions against Russian-linked maritime trade.
It also underscores ongoing tensions in international waters as Western nations seek to limit Russia’s economic activity in response to the conflict in Ukraine, which Macron said has been ongoing for more than four years.
