Seven years after becoming a viral sensation in South Africa, Hector and Nonhlanhla Mkansi, widely known as the ‘KFC couple’, are still together and continuing their life as a family of five.
The couple first captured public attention in 2019 when Hector proposed to Nonhlanhla at a KFC restaurant, a moment that quickly spread across social media and attracted widespread public and corporate support.
Their fairytale wedding took place on New Year’s Eve in 2019, with sponsorships from major brands including KFC South Africa, Audi, Coca-Cola, and Huawei, which helped fund their ceremony and honeymoon. However, their relationship story began much earlier.
The couple fell in love in 2010, began lobola negotiations in 2011, and were legally married in 2012, although they had not yet had their ideal celebration.Today, they have three children aged 14 years, two years, and six months.Despite their earlier fame, their day-to-day lives remain relatively modest, and they still live in the same RDP house in the Vaal.Nonhlanhla works as a teacher at Primrose High School, while Hector is currently unemployed.
He has been working towards improving his prospects by completing security-related certificates and is also considering starting a business in logistics or security. He often accompanies his wife to and from work, highlighting the couple’s continued close bond. While some of the initial corporate attention and sponsorship benefits have faded, the couple says they remain grounded and focused on family life.
They have also faced financial constraints that have limited their ability to celebrate anniversaries in recent years, but they hope to mark future milestones more meaningfully.Looking ahead, their shared goal is to improve their living situation and eventually move into a larger home that better suits their growing family.
