US and Iran negotiations in Doha stall despite claims of progress from Trump administration

Indirect talks between the United States and Iran held in Doha have ended without a breakthrough, with mediators confirming that discussions concluded in a stalemate despite cautious optimism from some parties involved.

The negotiations, facilitated by intermediaries from Qatar and Pakistan, focused on implementing a memorandum of understanding concerning security arrangements, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and steps towards maintaining a fragile ceasefire framework.

While Qatar’s foreign ministry described the discussions as making ‘positive progress’, officials acknowledged that key issues remain unresolved and require further negotiation.

US representatives, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, participated in meetings with mediators but did not engage in direct talks with Iranian officials.

Washington sources suggested that some aspects of the agreement had already been tentatively settled, yet Iran has reportedly refused to advance remaining clauses until initial conditions are fully stabilised and implemented.President Donald Trump, however, publicly stated that talks were progressing well and that the ‘denuclearisation of Iran’ was advancing positively.

The wider geopolitical context remains tense, with ongoing instability in the region, disruptions to global oil markets, and continued concerns over shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Vice President JD Vance defended the administration’s approach, arguing that diplomatic engagement reflects strength rather than weakness, while criticising those who favour continued military escalation.

Alongside the negotiations, Iranian officials issued warnings of strong responses to external threats, underscoring the fragile nature of the diplomatic process.

The situation is further complicated by broader regional dynamics, including strained US-Gulf relations and debates within Washington over its military presence in the Middle East.Although both sides have signalled willingness to continue discussions, no date has been confirmed for the next round of talks.
