US to impose new tariffs on countries over forced labor concerns

The US is set to introduce new tariffs targeting 60 countries over their alleged failure to combat forced labor, replacing the expiring 10% global levy imposed by Trump.Trade envoy Jamieson Greer confirmed preparations for tariffs ranging between 10% and 12.5%, aimed at enforcing US laws against forced labor. The move comes as the temporary 10% duty expires, with analysts predicting these new tariffs will cover most US trade. However, this could strain relations with key partners like the EU, China, Vietnam, and Japan, which have criticized similar measures as unjustified.

Additional tariffs, including 25% on Brazilian goods and 50% on Canadian products, are also in play, alongside trade investigations into 16 countries for excess industrial capacity. The use of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 is seen as a strategy to pressure Canada in USMCA negotiations, though tensions remain high.

The outcome of these measures could either lead to trade agreements or escalate conflicts, with uncertainty over when the US will unveil its full plan.
