Violence and arrests follow PSG Champions League victory celebrations in France

French authorities have confirmed the arrest of about 780 people across the country following violent incidents that broke out during celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal. What started as mass jubilation in Paris and other cities quickly degenerated into clashes between some groups of fans and security forces.

Thousands of people had taken to the streets to celebrate PSG’s win, with an estimated 22,000 police officers deployed nationwide to maintain order, especially after similar unrest was recorded during previous celebrations.

According to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, the situation escalated with increased use of fireworks and projectiles aimed at law enforcement officers.

The violence led to 57 members of the security forces getting injured, while around 219 civilians were also reported injured across France, including eight in serious condition.Authorities described the scale of arrests as a 32 percent increase compared to last year’s celebrations when PSG also won the competition.

In a separate development, the Paris public prosecutor’s office confirmed the death of a young man following a motocross bike accident on the Paris ring road during the celebrations.

Officials also reported a critical stabbing incident in the capital, where a victim was left in serious condition after being attacked with a bladed weapon. The French government has expressed concern over the recurring pattern of violence during football celebrations, despite heavy police deployment.

Authorities are now reviewing security measures to prevent further escalation during future sporting events, as celebrations continue to pose serious public safety challenges across major cities in France.
