WestJet has introduced a policy allowing passengers with bookings between July 30 and August 4 to freely modify or cancel their flights in response to ongoing labor disputes involving flight attendants.

The airline emphasized this measure aims to provide travelers with greater flexibility and confidence during a period of uncertainty caused by the potential strike.Earlier this month, WestJet flight attendants voted overwhelmingly (99.4%) in favor of striking, which could result in 4,400 union members legally walking off the job on August 2.

While the airline expressed hope for resolving the dispute without disrupting guests, it acknowledged the concerns travelers may have regarding their travel plans.

CUPE Local 8125 president Alia Hussain praised WestJet's decision as responsible, noting that such flexibility is essential for passengers impacted by labor disputes.

The move follows a previous major strike in 2024 involving airline mechanics during Canada Day weekend, which affected tens of thousands of travelers.WestJet reiterated its commitment to meaningful improvements for cabin crew while ensuring the airline's sustainability.This policy reflects broader tensions within the aviation industry regarding labor negotiations and their impact on passenger services.
