'Where's My Groom?' review: Joy Isi Bewaji and Nene Aliemeke deliver a powerful one-woman stage performance on betrayal and womanhood

Where's My Groom?is an intimate one-woman stage play written and directed by Joy Isi Bewaji, with Nene Aliemeke carrying the entire performance from beginning to end.The production tells the story of a woman whose life has been shaped by sacrifice, family responsibility and betrayal from an early age.

She was forced to take on adult responsibilities as a child, became the financial backbone of her family and even used her success from investing in Bitcoin to support those around her instead of herself. Her greatest emotional blow comes when the man she hoped to build a future with abandons her and eventually marries her own sister.Standing alone on stage in a wedding gown, she struggles with grief, disappointment and the emotional damage left behind by years of neglect.

Rather than asking the audience to sympathise immediately, the play gradually reveals the experiences that explain her behaviour and emotional instability.Aliemeke's performance has been praised for keeping the audience fully engaged without the support of other actors. She frequently interacts with people in the crowd, making the experience feel personal and immersive.

The review also highlights Joy Isi Bewaji's script for refusing to simplify difficult themes such as family expectations, loneliness, betrayal and the pressure placed on women. The production is described as intentionally uncomfortable but deeply thought-provoking.Where's My Groom?is scheduled to run every Sunday at 5 p.m.throughout the rest of July.
