Wives of detained military officers appeal to President Tinubu for fair and transparent trial process

Wives of military officers who are currently being held over allegations connected to an alleged coup plot have written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, begging for fairness, transparency, and justice in the ongoing military trial involving their husbands.

In the letter, titled “A Humble Appeal for Fairness, Transparency, and Justice in the Ongoing Military Trial,” the women acknowledged that the President had approved the commencement of the trial, but expressed strong concern that the process may be affected by bias, coercion, and institutional prejudice.

They stressed that while allegations such as mutiny, coup plotting, or actions capable of undermining military authority are serious and must be treated with gravity, the justice process itself must remain impartial and free from any form of intimidation or unfair treatment.

The wives referenced past military trials in Nigeria, pointing out that some historical cases were later viewed with regret by the public due to perceptions of injustice or persecution.

They also raised concerns about the prolonged detention of the accused officers, claiming that there were reports of inhumane treatment and possible coercion in obtaining confessional statements.According to them, such issues raise serious doubts about the credibility and fairness of the ongoing proceedings.

The letter further emphasised that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, insisting that no conviction should be based on statements allegedly obtained under fear or torture.

Meanwhile, the case is already before a Federal High Court in Abuja, where a trial-within-trial has been ordered to determine the admissibility of certain statements and video evidence after defendants claimed coercion.

The Federal Government is prosecuting several individuals, including retired military officers, a police inspector, a civilian worker, and others, over alleged treason, terrorism, and conspiracy to stage a coup against the Tinubu administration. The arrests were first announced in October 2025, with authorities alleging a coordinated network and surveillance of key national facilities.
