Yanga and Simba in tight title race as relegation fight intensifies in Mainland Premier League
Tanzania’s top football giants Young Africans (Yanga) and Simba SC have already secured places in next season’s CAF inter-club competitions, but the exact tournament each team will play in is still undecided as the Mainland Tanzania Premier League approaches its final stretch. With only five matches remaining, the competition for both the league title and continental qualification remains very tight.
Yanga currently lead the table with 60 points, just two points ahead of rivals Simba who have 58 points, while Azam FC sit in third place with 52 points.
Yanga remain favourites to win the league title, but they still need at least eight more points to mathematically confirm their CAF Champions League spot.Simba, on the other hand, require around 10 points to guarantee their place in Africa’s top club competition.
Azam FC also remain in contention for continental football, with a potential maximum of 67 points if they win all remaining matches, although overtaking both Yanga and Simba for a Champions League place remains difficult.
The qualification system in Tanzania awards the top two league teams CAF Champions League slots, while the CRDB Federation Cup winner and third-placed league team enter the CAF Confederation Cup.The Federation Cup has added more tension, as Yanga, Simba, Azam, and Coastal Union have reached the semifinals.
Yanga will face Azam FC on June 21 at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza, while Simba take on Coastal Union on June 20 at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
A cup win could still provide an alternative route into continental football, especially for Coastal Union, who remain outside the top league positions.Other teams like Singida Black Stars still hold a mathematical chance of finishing high enough for continental qualification if results go their way.The final weeks of the season are expected to be highly competitive as clubs fight for both domestic glory and African football slots.
