Youth Disillusionment in Tarime: Barriers in Agriculture, Education, and Governance Drive Apathy

In Tarime, a fertile agricultural area in Mara Region, Tanzania, young people are increasingly losing confidence in both agriculture and political participation.

A recent youth dialogue held in Saba Saba ward revealed deep frustration among participants who say that, despite the region’s rich farming potential, structural barriers make it extremely difficult for them to benefit from agriculture.Youth explained that starting farming requires capital for seeds, fertiliser, and land access, which many of them simply do not have.Even suggestions like renting land were dismissed as unrealistic due to financial constraints.

The discussion, part of the Dira Mtaani: Vijana Wanasemaje programme by The Chanzo and Twaweza East Africa, highlighted how unemployment, lack of government support, and weak economic systems are pushing young people away from farming.Participants also criticised the education system, arguing that it does not prepare students for practical life or entrepreneurship. Many claimed that learners leave school with insufficient skills, making them vulnerable to poverty and exploitation.

Beyond agriculture, youth also expressed frustration with market systems, noting that farmers often lose profits to external traders who control harvesting and distribution. This leaves local communities with minimal benefits from their own produce.Politically, the youth described public meetings as ineffective, saying their concerns are repeatedly raised but rarely acted upon. This has led to widespread apathy, with some admitting they no longer attend community meetings because they expect no change.

The conversation also touched on shrinking civic space in Tanzania, with participants expressing fear that speaking openly against leadership could lead to consequences.

Overall, the dialogue reflects a growing sense of disillusionment among Tarime’s youth, who feel excluded from both economic opportunities and meaningful democratic participation, raising concerns about the future of development in the region.
