The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government has announced a comprehensive climate strategy that extends beyond the traditional net-zero emissions target, focusing on building resilience against a hotter and more volatile climate.

Climate Change Minister Suzanne Orr emphasized the need for systemic changes that make it easier for residents to transition to climate-friendly practices while unlocking economic opportunities.The strategy includes permanent support for apartment buildings to switch off gas, with a pilot program set to become a long-term initiative.This involves funding feasibility studies and implementation plans for complex buildings to electrify their systems.The updated strategy reaffirms the 2045 gas phase-out target, with some areas of the natural gas network to be decommissioned sooner.It also outlines ambitious goals for zero-emission vehicles, public transport, and refrigerant replacements.

Orr highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and citizens, stressing that both parties must take action to achieve climate resilience.The strategy now integrates climate considerations into all government operations, linking transport, planning, and nature conservation efforts.

Despite missing an interim emissions reduction target last year, the government remains committed to net-zero by 2045, with a focus on cleaner transport, building upgrades, and carbon storage through trees and soil.

The new approach aims to position Canberra as a 'climate positive city' where the government minimizes environmental harm and actively restores natural ecosystems.
