Adolf Galland’s Unconventional Lobster Delivery Flight During WWII

In April 1941, German Luftwaffe ace Adolf Galland, then a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the JG 26 fighter wing, orchestrated an unusual mission: personally delivering a gourmet seafood basket to celebrate the 49th birthday of his mentor, General Theo Osterkamp.

Galland loaded lobsters, oysters, and champagne into his Messerschmitt Bf 109F-0 and took off from Brest, France, with his wingman, Oberleutnant Westphal, heading to Le Touquet.

Along the way, he encountered a formation of British Spitfires near Dover and, true to his audacious and flamboyant style, engaged them despite having fragile luxury items on board.During the dogfight, Galland accidentally lowered his landing gear due to unfamiliarity with the new aircraft model, making his plane look crippled.Nevertheless, he managed to shoot down or damage several Spitfires, impressively maneuvering through the formation.British ace Paddy Finucane even mistakenly claimed Galland as a downed plane.

After the skirmish, Galland retracted his gear and safely delivered the seafood to Osterkamp, embodying a combination of daring, chivalry, and personal flair.

Known for his cigars and cartoon-decorated aircraft, Galland’s legacy spans over 700 combat missions and numerous acts of honor, including allowing enemy pilots to recover personal items. He passed away in 1996, leaving behind stories of skill, courage, and a unique approach to aerial combat.
