The Anambra State Government has started free hypertension screening services across all government-owned health facilities in the state as part of efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and improve early detection of non-communicable diseases. The programme is available in Primary Health Centres, Comprehensive Health Centres and General Hospitals throughout the state.
Speaking in Awka, the wife of the governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, said the initiative shows the government's commitment to making quality healthcare accessible to all residents.
She encouraged adults across the state to take advantage of the free service, noting that hypertension remains one of the most common and deadliest health conditions affecting many people.According to her, regular blood pressure checks can help detect health problems early before they become severe or life-threatening.She stressed that preventive healthcare and healthy living are important for improving the well-being of individuals and families.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, also explained that health officials, medical officers and facility managers have been directed to ensure full implementation of the programme across public health institutions.
He described hypertension as a major public health concern and noted that it is often called a 'silent killer' because many people may have the condition without obvious symptoms.
Obidike urged residents to visit the nearest public health facility to know their blood pressure status and receive appropriate medical guidance where necessary.
He added that early detection remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious complications associated with hypertension and improve long-term health outcomes for residents of the state.
