Anambra Govt. steps in to resolve Onitsha market land dispute

Intersociety, a human rights group, has praised the Anambra State Government for stepping in to resolve a long-standing land dispute between the Onitsha Ozomagana Building Materials Market Association and the Modebe Family. The conflict, which resurfaced in November 2025, involves ownership of a property in the state.

In letters dated July 24, 2026, Intersociety commended the government for its timely intervention and called for a thorough investigation to wrap up the matter swiftly.

The group urged the state to set up a special inquiry panel to complement the Commerce Ministry's probe, aiming to restore normalcy and ensure a secure business environment at the market.

Meanwhile, Intersociety criticized the police for criminalizing the civil dispute, citing arbitrary arrests and unlawful detentions of traders since April 2026.They demanded the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department and full enforcement of the July 7, 2026 directive. The organization also called on the Inspector-General of Police to withdraw police units from the case and release those unlawfully detained. This dispute highlights the need for balanced legal resolution and protection of civil rights in commercial areas.
