Angus Barbieri: Record-Setting 382-Day Fast and Weight Loss Journey

Angus Barbieri, a Scottish man of Italian descent, set the record for the longest fast in history, lasting 382 days from June 14, 1965, to June 30, 1966.Starting at 456 pounds (207 kg), he reduced his weight to 180 pounds (82 kg), losing a total of 276 pounds (125 kg).

During the fast, Barbieri consumed only tea, coffee, sparkling water, vitamins, and yeast extract while being closely monitored with regular medical checkups at Maryfield Hospital in Dundee.Initially intending only a short fast, he continued under medical supervision, adapting remarkably well and maintaining his health throughout.Barbieri lived mostly at home during this period, avoiding normal food temptations by stepping away from his father’s fish and chip shop. After completing the fast, he gradually reintroduced food, starting with a boiled egg and buttered bread. The Guinness Book of Records recognized his achievement in 1971, and he maintained a healthy weight in subsequent years.Barbieri later moved to Warwick, married, and had two sons before passing away in September 1990.His case remains a notable example of extreme fasting under careful medical guidance and is not recommended for unsupervised attempts.
