ASUU issues strike warning affecting 11 state universities over unpaid allowances

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh warning of a possible indefinite strike that could disrupt academic activities in 11 state-owned universities across Nigeria.

The affected institutions include Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, Delta State University in Abraka, Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, and several others spread across Edo, Ondo, Delta, Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states.

According to ASUU, the threat follows the failure of these state governments to fully implement the financial components of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.

The union, speaking through its Benin and Yola zones, stated that it has reached an impasse after multiple rounds of dialogue with the respective state governments yielded no meaningful results.

Key demands include the payment of Consequential Adjustment to Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Professorial Allowance, and outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.

ASUU claims that while federal universities and several other state institutions have implemented the agreement, the affected states have refused to comply.

ASUU has given the concerned state governments until the end of July 2026 to meet its demands or face a total and indefinite shutdown of academic activities in the listed universities.

The union also noted that its branches in the affected institutions have already begun mobilising members in preparation for industrial action if no agreement is reached before the deadline. However, ASUU clarified that no strike has officially commenced at this stage. The warning only applies to the listed state universities and does not affect federal universities or other unaffected state-owned institutions.Students in the impacted schools may therefore continue academic activities for now, but there is growing uncertainty as the deadline approaches.
