Auditor-General's Report Says Ondo SUBEB Failed to Address Audit Queries and Submit Contract Records Over Five Years

The 2025 report of the Ondo State Auditor-General says the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has repeatedly failed to respond to audit queries, obey legislative directives and provide important contract documents over a period of five years.

According to the report, several audit issues first raised between 2021 and 2024 remain unresolved despite repeated reminders from the Office of the State Auditor-General and instructions from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Ondo State House of Assembly.

The report explained that the PAC reviewed earlier Auditor-General's reports covering 2019 and 2020 in July 2022 and directed the Board to address every issue identified.Reminder letters were later sent in December 2022 and April 2023, but the Auditor-General stated that no response had been received from the Board.

In March 2026, the House Committee again reviewed the Auditor-General's reports for 2021, 2022 and 2023 and instructed SUBEB to invite auditors to carry out statutory inspections of outstanding projects. However, the report said the Board did not make any arrangements for the physical verification of those projects.

The Auditor-General also alleged that SUBEB failed to produce contract records relating to UBEC/SUBEB 2020 and 2021 capital projects, despite formal requests and additional reminder letters, including one sent in April 2025.According to the report, no reply had been received as of the time the report was completed.

The findings raise fresh concerns about accountability, transparency and compliance with financial oversight procedures in the management of public funds meant for basic education in Ondo State.

The report also comes after previous concerns over the condition of some public primary schools despite significant government spending on basic education.
