Australian activists freed after Gaza aid flotilla detention allege mistreatment in Israeli custody

Several Australians who took part in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla have returned home after being detained by Israeli authorities in international waters west of Cyprus.Eleven Australians were among around 400 activists intercepted during the mission, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Upon arriving back in Australia, some participants alleged they experienced physical abuse, sexual assault, intimidation and denial of medical care while in detention.

Activist Violet Coco claimed detainees were beaten, tortured and sexually assaulted, while others allegedly suffered fractures, head injuries and lack of access to essential medication such as insulin and blood pressure treatment.Student Gemma O'Toole described herself as traumatised by the experience and alleged activists were subjected to violence while in custody.Another participant, Surya McEwen, said he was detained for about 80 hours and claimed he was beaten by Israeli soldiers during questioning.Israeli authorities rejected the accusations, with Israel’s prison services stating detainees were held according to the law.The Israel Defense Forces also said its procedures require respectful treatment of flotilla participants.

Members of the flotilla are now consulting lawyers and intend to gather evidence for possible submission to the International Criminal Court as part of broader allegations concerning the treatment of Palestinians and activists.

Despite the ordeal, several activists said the incident had strengthened their resolve to continue advocating for humanitarian support and Palestinian rights.

The story also included support information for victims of sexual assault and noted that the flotilla mission has drawn international attention amid ongoing tensions surrounding the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
