Australians released from Israeli detention after Gaza flotilla interception claim mistreatment

Eleven Australians were among more than 400 international activists detained by Israeli forces after their Gaza-bound flotilla was intercepted in international waters.

The group, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla aiming to deliver humanitarian aid, was intercepted on Tuesday and the participants were subsequently held in a prison in southern Israel before being deported to Türkiye on Thursday.Upon arrival in Istanbul, several Australian participants reported experiencing physical, psychological, and sexual abuse during their detention. One activist, Juliet Lamont, stated that at least 40 people on the vessel had broken bones and around 15 had been sexually assaulted.Another, Zack Schofield, described poor treatment including denial of food and water, as well as the use of tasers and beatings. The Israel Prison Service maintained that all detainees were held in accordance with the law and with regard for their basic rights.

The Australian government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, confirmed consular access was provided and raised concerns with Israeli authorities regarding the treatment of detainees. No Australians required significant medical attention beyond basic first aid.

The incident has drawn international criticism, particularly over videos posted by Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Miri Regev showing detained activists in degrading conditions.Australian officials, including Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek and Greens Senator Nick McKim, condemned the behaviour as disgraceful.

The flotilla was attempting to challenge Israel's naval blockade of Gaza amid ongoing humanitarian concerns, despite a US-brokered ceasefire in place since October 2025.The event highlights ongoing tensions in the region and differing international perspectives on the blockade and activist efforts.
