Five arrested, two detained after attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant victory in the Falta assembly constituency repoll in West Bengal, further consolidating its political position in the state.
The Election Commission had ordered a repoll across 285 booths after allegations of large-scale irregularities during the April 29 voting phase, including reports of tampering such as tapes being placed over candidate names on electronic voting machines.
In the final counting held on Sunday, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda registered a decisive win, securing 149,666 votes, while Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi finished a distant second with 40,645 votes.
This result not only reaffirmed the BJP’s earlier performance in the state but also restored its tally to 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly.
The seat had historically been a Trinamool Congress stronghold, with the party winning it in the last three consecutive assembly elections (2011, 2016, and 2021).
The result is being viewed as politically significant given its location in South 24 Parganas under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who has repeatedly projected electoral dominance in the region.
The campaign also saw intense political narratives, including references to the so-called “Diamond Harbour model” and controversies surrounding law and order, administrative actions, and candidate withdrawals. One local TMC-linked candidate had reportedly withdrawn ahead of polling, further shaping the contest dynamics.
The repoll outcome is being interpreted as a boost for the BJP’s organisational reach in southern West Bengal and a symbolic setback for the Trinamool Congress in a previously secure bastion.
The Election Commission’s decision to conduct a repoll across all booths underlined concerns over electoral fairness and procedural integrity in the constituency.
