Police in West Bengal have arrested five individuals and detained two others in connection with the alleged assault on Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur.
The incident took place on Saturday when the MP visited the area to meet the family of a party worker who was reportedly killed in post-poll violence.During the visit, a mob allegedly attacked him by throwing eggs and stones and raised slogans against him.
Banerjee sustained minor injuries, including bruising to his chest, and was taken to private hospitals for medical examination before being discharged the same night.Following the incident, police registered a suo motu case and formed three specialised teams to investigate the matter.Authorities identified the suspects using CCTV footage and news video recordings.Five individuals were arrested after interrogation, while two others were detained for further questioning.The arrested persons are expected to be produced before a court in Baruipur.
The incident triggered political controversy, with the Trinamool Congress alleging involvement of BJP workers, while the BJP denied the charges and attributed the incident to public anger.Banerjee also claimed that security arrangements were inadequate and indicated that he would approach the Calcutta High Court regarding the matter.
In a separate but related incident on the same day, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was attacked near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district while submitting a deputation related to post-poll violence.He claimed BJP workers assaulted him, causing a head injury, and later staged a protest outside the police station with party supporters.The attacks drew strong political reactions at the national level.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident, stating that violence against an elected representative undermines democracy.Other political leaders also criticised the attack while highlighting concerns over rising political tensions in the state.
