Bruce Springsteen supports Stephen Colbert amid show cancellation controversy

Bruce Springsteen publicly expressed his support for Stephen Colbert during the host’s penultimate episode of Late Night on 20 May 2026.The Boss described Colbert as “the first man in America who lost his show because we have a president who cannot take a joke,” referencing both Colbert’s outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump and speculation that CBS cancelled the show for political reasons despite citing financial concerns.

Springsteen performed his ICE protest song 'Streets of Minneapolis', using the opportunity to denounce Trump and highlight issues surrounding American values and civil liberties.

Previously, Trump reacted publicly to Colbert’s show cancellation, criticising the host’s talent, while Colbert responded with his characteristic satirical outrage.

In addition, Springsteen has repeatedly criticised Trump in the past, calling for impeachment and describing the president as corrupt and incompetent.Springsteen also highlighted social issues during his tour, including ICE’s actions following the deaths of two Minneapolis residents.

The White House, through spokesperson Steven Cheung, condemned Springsteen’s tour, accusing him of suffering from 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.

The episode reflects ongoing tensions between prominent artists and political figures in the United States, with Springsteen and Colbert using their platforms to speak out on freedom of expression and governmental accountability.
