The Congress party is reportedly planning a strategic leadership transition in Karnataka, moving from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, as part of its effort to manage anti-incumbency and strengthen its political positioning ahead of future elections.

The decision is rooted in internal understandings made during the original selection of the Chief Minister, when both leaders had a strong claim to the post.

According to party sources, the change is seen as timely after three years of the Siddaramaiah-led government, with Congress aiming to refresh its public image and address perceived governance gaps.The leadership shift is also intended to counter the natural anti-incumbency that tends to affect ruling parties in Karnataka.

Congress strategists believe that DK Shivakumar can help rebuild the party’s urban voter base, attract younger voters, and consolidate support among the influential Vokkaliga community, particularly in Bengaluru and Old Mysuru regions.At the same time, the party expects Siddaramaiah’s welfare-driven ‘Ahinda’ mobilisation to continue as a strong foundation.The transition is also linked to broader electoral planning, including the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections and the subsequent Lok Sabha polls.

Congress believes that the BJP-JDS alliance had impacted its performance in the 2024 general elections despite a strong showing in the 2023 state assembly polls.

Party insiders suggest that DK Shivakumar’s organisational skills and political style may help improve governance perception and counter opposition narratives.

The transition is also expected to reduce internal uncertainty that has persisted due to speculation over leadership change, allowing the party to present a more stable and renewed governance approach in the state.
