Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka CM; DK Shivakumar to take over as new Chief Minister
Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met senior Congress leaders in New Delhi a day after resigning from his post, marking a key moment in the political transition within the state.
During his meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath, Siddaramaiah reportedly conveyed that he had fulfilled the party’s directive to step down, enabling the leadership transition in Karnataka.He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Chief Minister and confirmed his resignation as requested by the party high command.
Sources indicate that Siddaramaiah had earlier declined offers of a Rajya Sabha seat and a national-level role in the party, stating his preference to remain active in Karnataka politics.However, during the latest discussions, he is believed to have presented a set of expectations regarding his future role.
These reportedly include a request for a cabinet position for himself and a significant portfolio for his son, Yathindra, along with accommodation of several loyal supporters in the new state cabinet.The meeting also touched upon the formation of the new Karnataka government and internal party restructuring.Congress leadership is expected to play a decisive role in finalising cabinet composition and organisational changes in the state unit.Party president Mallikarjun Kharge praised Siddaramaiah’s long public service and contributions to social justice.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress leaders confirmed that a Congress Legislature Party meeting is scheduled to decide the next Chief Minister and formalise the transition process smoothly.
The overall developments indicate continued negotiations within the party as it manages leadership change while maintaining internal balance and unity in Karnataka politics.
