Tanzania has inaugurated East Africa’s first Maritime Rescue Coordination Center on Lake Victoria’s shores in Mwanza, marking a key step in regional efforts to enhance water safety and emergency response.

The facility, a collaborative project among East African Community nations, aims to address frequent boat accidents and drownings that have plagued the lake for years.

Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater body, supports millions through fishing, transport, and trade but has faced challenges like overcrowded vessels, poor weather conditions, and inadequate safety measures.The new center will serve as a central hub for coordinating search-and-rescue missions across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.It enables real-time vessel tracking, rapid emergency response, and improved communication with maritime operators.Officials emphasize the project’s role in fostering regional cooperation to protect lives and strengthen maritime governance.

Mwanza was chosen for its strategic position as a trade and fishing hub, allowing effective coverage of Tanzanian waters while facilitating cross-border coordination.The initiative aligns with broader East African Community goals to tackle shared challenges through integrated solutions.
