A cave diving tragedy in the Maldives has led experts to reiterate serious warnings about the dangers of the sport when undertaken without adequate training, planning and specialised equipment.

Five divers, including four Italian nationals and a Maldivian navy diver involved in recovery efforts, died following an incident inside an underwater cave system in Vaavu atoll.

Their bodies were recovered after a complex multi-day operation coordinated by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) alongside Maldivian authorities and international cave diving specialists.The victims included a university ecology professor, her daughter, two marine researchers, and an experienced diving instructor.The Maldivian navy diver later died due to decompression sickness during recovery operations.

Specialist teams used closed-circuit rebreathers, scooters and extensive backup systems to complete the recovery in challenging underwater conditions.Following the incident, diving experts emphasised that cave diving presents fundamentally different risks from open-water diving.Unlike open water, divers cannot ascend directly to the surface in an emergency, and visibility can rapidly deteriorate due to disturbed sediment.Depth also increases gas consumption and decompression risks, requiring strict ascent protocols.

Experts such as experienced cave rescuers and instructors highlighted the importance of redundancy in equipment, including multiple air sources, lights and navigation tools, as well as continuous guide lines to prevent disorientation.Proper propulsion techniques are also essential to avoid stirring up sediment and causing near-zero visibility conditions.Beyond technical skills, specialists stressed the importance of mindset, training limits and decision-making.

Even highly experienced divers may face pressure to exceed safe limits, but experts warn that cave diving remains unforgiving when protocols are not strictly followed.The incident has renewed calls for stronger adherence to established safety standards and greater awareness of the risks involved.
