Federal Government Approves 1,000 Forest Guards and Special Rescue Operation After Oyo School Abduction

President Bola Tinubu has approved urgent security measures following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.The decision includes the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to help secure forested and rural areas where criminal elements are believed to be operating.The move is being done in collaboration with the Oyo State government as part of efforts to strengthen local security architecture.

According to a statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the federal government also deployed a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify operations aimed at securing the release of the abducted victims.

The delegation sent by the President visited affected communities in Oriire Local Government Area, including Esiele and Yawota, where the abductions took place.The incident involved pupils and teachers from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A.Primary School, which were attacked on May 15, 2026.

The delegation, led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, also included top security officials such as the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Minister of Defence.Community leaders and residents expressed their concerns, including calls for the establishment of a military base in the area.The federal delegation said such requests would be communicated to the President for consideration.

Government officials assured residents that rescue operations would be intelligence-driven and carefully coordinated, combining both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to ensure the safe return of the abducted students and teachers.

The government reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and restoring confidence in affected communities, while assuring families that all necessary resources are being deployed to bring back the victims safely.
