A recent survey by Octa Research reveals that 64% of Filipinos distrust China, a significant increase from 55% in March 2026.The survey, conducted from July 4 to 11, coincided with the Philippines' 10th anniversary of the 2016 arbitral ruling on the West Philippine Sea.

The findings indicate a growing skepticism toward China, driven by perceptions of harassment of Filipino personnel and fisherfolk in the disputed waters, as well as Beijing's expansive territorial claims.Regional disparities are notable, with Mimaropa showing the highest distrust at 94%, while Central Visayas has the lowest at 47%.Age groups also show varying levels of distrust, with the 18-24 age bracket exhibiting the highest at 73%, followed by older demographics.

The survey highlights that public opinion remains highly responsive to issues surrounding the West Philippine Sea, influenced by government transparency, civil society advocacy, and media coverage.The results suggest a shift from previous trends of declining distrust, indicating a more polarized stance among Filipinos toward China.The survey's margin of error is ±3% at a 95% confidence level, ensuring the findings are statistically significant.
