Four Men Sentenced to 35 Years for Armed Robberies and Kidnappings Targeting KwaZulu-Natal Teachers

Four men have been sentenced to 35 years in prison each for a series of armed robberies and kidnappings targeting teachers across KwaZulu-Natal.The Pinetown Regional Court found that the accused, Mthobisi Wonder Shozi, Lebo Nhlakanipho Magwaza, Brian Tyron Charles, and Sbonelo Sxolile Mkhulisi, failed to present compelling reasons to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences. The crimes occurred in February 2023, with attacks on Nazareth Primary School, Edamini Primary School, and Tholulwazi Secondary School.Magistrate Muntukayise Khumalo emphasized that the perpetrators showed no remorse and that the violence was meticulously planned. The principal of Tholulwazi Secondary School suffered severe injuries during the attack.Prosecutors argued that teachers are the cornerstone of society and that the crimes traumatized communities. The court also ordered the men to be unfit for firearm possession, with Shozi’s sentence running concurrently with a separate 10-year term.
