Government expands land formalisation drive in Misungwi to reduce disputes and strengthen land ownership

The Government of Tanzania has stepped up its land formalisation programme in Misungwi District, Mwanza Region, calling on wananchi to fully participate in land surveying and registration activities aimed at reducing land disputes and improving security of land ownership.

During a ceremony held in Rubuga Village, Commissioner for Lands Nathaniel Mathew oversaw the distribution of 668 land titles and stressed that proper land surveying is essential for establishing clear boundaries between villages, individuals and different land-use areas.

He noted that many land conflicts in Tanzania arise because of unclear boundaries and limited public understanding of land rights and responsibilities.Mathew encouraged continued land education so that citizens can better understand lawful land ownership and avoid creating new disputes.

Misungwi Member of Parliament Silvery Luboja described the exercise as an important opportunity to support local development and urged councillors, village leaders and land professionals to mobilise residents to participate fully. He also highlighted the need for practical surveying solutions in mountainous and difficult-to-access areas to ensure no communities are left behind.

In addition, he encouraged ongoing public awareness on proper land purchase procedures to reduce cases of fraud and ownership conflicts caused by informal transactions.Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development Dr.Leonard Akwilapo reaffirmed the government's commitment to extending the programme across the country.

He explained that formal land ownership improves tenure security, helps resolve existing disputes and enables landowners to use their property as collateral for accessing financial services.

The government also pledged continued budget support for land planning and management authorities, recognising secure land rights as an important foundation for economic growth, investment and long-term community development.
